5 QUESTIONS ASKED BY ETEM - MILCHO TOMOV AND ATANAS NIKOLOV, MEMBERS OF WE:R ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN STUDIO

Founded by architect Tomov and architect Nikolov, WE:R is engaged in architecture and interior design mainly in Bulgaria and Germany. Both partners summarize the philosophy of their work as a combination of rational thinking and imposition of an architecture that is simple and sustainable over time.

How would you describe your style and personal signature, which characterizes your work on a given project and distinguishes you?

Nowadays it is very difficult to have a personal signature without being accused of plagiarism. That is why we rather try to rationalize, minimize, detail and refract our customers' ideas through our prism so that we can create a product that both parties can boast about.

Who is the architect whose projects inspire you the most?

We cannot name just one! Good architecture is the product of an understanding and attitude towards the material, detail, light, and context of the environment in which you intervene. However, if we have to reduce their number and mention only two practitioners, they would be David Chipperfield and Herzog & de Meuron, and again they are more than two.

There are a number of thoughts of famous architects who share what architecture is for them. Tell me what architecture means for you?

Architecture is definitely a way of life. We literally live in it. It is not just a profession that you practice eight hours a day, and then you stop and forget about it until the morning. For better or worse, it changes you so much that you start paying close attention to the little things, to every detail, and we are not referring just to buildings. Detail matters!

Can you imagine the city of the future in 50 years? What will the architecture be then?

We hope that it will be the same as it was 100 years ago. Namely, the beginning of modernism and specifically the Bauhaus movement, which turned 100 years.

What is the book dedicated to architecture that you would recommend to anyone involved in the profession to read? How did it impress you?

Written by an architect?! There is no such book! :) It is advisable for everyone involved in the profession to get acquainted with the past so that they can look ahead. However, if we have to recommend a book, it is Delirious New York - The Book of Architectural Books!
