5 QUESTIONS ASKED BY ETEM - WE PRESENT YOU VLADIMIR MARINOV FROM DEFINE ENGINEERS

According to you what is the masterpiece project of all time?

For me, the most important building today is the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Having worked on this project for several years now, I understand why it is the most impressive project both internally and externally. It is about the essence of humanity - that whatever we do, we strive for perfection. In fact, one of the reasons most of the architecture today has disadvantages that the Sagrada Familia does not have is that we face many commercial barriers for a number of reasons, many of which are justified. But, of course, not every building is a masterpiece. In my opinion, a masterpiece has the qualities of being a process that lacks commercial moments. This brings us back to the beginning of the Sagrada Familia project - the pursuit of pure creativity in the name of God. Personally I am not religious, but this project has created an environment where pure creativity thrives. And the rest of the construction process that we, architects, and engineers strive to achieve, can actually be done in the Sagrada Familia at the highest level of quality.

What trends do you foresee entering architecture locally and globally?

In my opinion, trends in Contemporary Architecture include working on a larger scale. So instead of looking at buildings one by one, we need to start thinking on an urban scale, at the level of urban architecture, urban planning, and even at the level of the suburbs, the connections between cities. I think that this is already happening. We will begin to explore construction in the 21st century, with climate change in the spotlight. I do not think that less attention will be paid to details in architecture. Nowadays, we simply have the means to design buildings better and faster, and to build them for short periods of time. Therefore, we will start thinking more broadly at the urban level.

Do you have a muse or something that inspires you to work?

I have a muse. I always question everything I do in my work, I always seek perfection and uphold this high standard in everything I do, whether I am designing a building, bridge or doing anything else related to my profession. I do this in order to contribute.

What is the material of the future according to you?

The material of the future – unobtainium. Something that cannot be achieved - unattainable.

In fact, we are obviously moving towards a very digital and very interactive future, in which we will not use materials for something static, but as something dynamic that responds to the environment. In my opinion, this will lead to more environmental decisions, to a biological future. If I try to predict the future, I think these decisions will be more biological than anything else.

What is your favorite book and what are you reading right now?

The "Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand, it is one of my favorite books. It is a book about two architects, one of whom chooses the commercial path in his life and career and the other takes on the pure path of perfection and ultimately self-destruction. At one point he becomes so obsessed about what he does and the lack of perfection in the real world that in the end, he starts to blow up his buildings.

And at the moment I'm reading a book called “The psychopath's test”. I'm trying to figure out if I'm a psychopath. I don't think that I am, but the truth is, there are quite a few around us. It's really a little bit scary to find out, and as you read the book, you see how obvious this is.
