ETEM IN THE UNIQUE EXHIBITION "THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS"

ETEM actively participates as a sponsor in the exhibition organized by the Benaki Museum and the Architectural Office Neiheiser Argyros.

The report was postponed due to emergency conditions. It will be available to the public again from September 3 to October 11.

The Exhibition of the Athens School, part of the Greek precinct of the 16th Venice Biennale of Architecture, is a unique architecturally developing research project that, for the first time, detects and gathers academic spaces from different periods of history and from different parts of the world.

The exhibition and its name, "The School of Athens", is inspired by the famous fresco of Raphael. The masterpiece of the Renaissance artist shows all the great mathematicians, philosophers and scientists of classical antiquity, gathered to share their ideas and learning from each other. All these great personalities have existed at different times, but in Raphael's mural they are all gathered under one roof.

The architectural plan of the Athens School aims to bring together academic "achievements" from different ages, schools and individuals, not only "minds", but also to bring together the spaces in which these achievements have been communicated.

For the first time, visitors will be able to see physical models of seventy different academic commonalities from history and the world, implemented and not. All models are on the same scale - 1: 200 - and represent only those areas of the university that can be recognized as academically common, excluding all other enclosed spaces such as classrooms and offices. Physical models are complemented by data, drawings and images, which allow further comparison of works for reflection and experimentation.

With a key element of a mirror system that reflects and multiplies the models, the work literally extends outwards, beyond the physical boundaries of the showroom. Although this work is neither complete nor absolute, it is an ongoing and evolving research, an ever-expanding grid of academic public architecture.

The work of the Athens School is a kind of "free space" education. The exhibition has now been expanded and redesigned for its new presentation. The models of the academic spaces are placed at the end of the vertical steel bars, raised at the height of the waist for easy viewing from all angles and organized in a grid that fills the pavilion equally in all directions. The models are supplemented by data, drawings and images from each school, which allow further comparison of projects.

Ryan Neiheiser, co-founder and co-founder of the Neiheiser Argyros architectural firm, explains: , on the stairs, in the cafeteria, in the courtyard - in the places we call “academic commons.” Socrates taught in the Ancient Agora, Plato founded his Academy in the olive grove of Athens, where he often taught while walking. a communal courtyard, while the universities of the 20th century have spacious corridors of traffic that function as informal learning spaces ”.

The ETEM team was impressed by this monumental project and supports the exhibition so that more people can get acquainted with this unique scientific work.

"For ETEM, the highest goal is to support such ongoing and evolving research projects which, on the one hand, will benefit industry experts and, on the other hand, will be of interest to the general public." "Throughout history, architects have experimented with different spatial strategies to create 'free spaces' and I think 'The Athens School' shows us the best of them," said ETEM Business Director Ioannis Chrysafis.
