Sustainability - the new universal language

Sustainability has become the most critical global initiative of our lifetime. Therefore, on the 1st of January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – adopted by the world leaders in September 2015 at a historic UN summit – officially came into force.

The 17 SDGs recognize that action in one area will affect the outcomes in others and that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. And as it has become a valuable indicator for investors and a key decision-making component for customers, there is a crucial need for companies to also have a firm grasp on their contribution. The following figure depicts all goals in their order, numeration, and colour code.

If all companies were to take fundamental steps – like respecting employee rights, not polluting land, sea, or air, and refusing bribery and extortion –enormous progress towards achieving the SDGs would be accomplished. Since the declaration of the global Sustainable Development Goals, it has become clear that their completion would be incomprehensible without a new generation of technologies.

What has been less clear on the other hand, was which technologies are most critical for the SDGs to be accomplished. Therefore, the team of Transformative Technologies released an in-depth study to identify the 50 most important technology breakouts. The CEO of the Institute for Transformative Technologies – Shashi Buluswar believes that at least 40 out of 50 breakthroughs will be developed by the time the year 2030 comes. However, only about 25 are likely to reach the hundreds of millions (or even billions) needed to fully impact the SGDs.

Based upon importance of acting now to reflect the change, the SDGs in action app has been developed to highlight the world’s to-do list to end poverty, reduce inequalities and tackle climate change. The app has been brought by GSMA and represents the interest of nearly 800 mobile operators worldwide, and Project Everyone is a non-profit global campaign to spread the messaging of SDGs.

Within the App, you will be able to keep track of what other people around you are doing to achieve the Global Goals, which may inspire you to take an action of your own. Additionally, you can take part in other people’s actions and invite your friends to join you. Last but not least, you have the ability to make your voice heard by creating your own actions which result in achieving the Global Goals, where you can invite others to participate.

The SDGs provide worldwide guidance for addressing the global challenges facing the international community. It is about time for companies and everyone to join the mission of preserving the world’s opportunity to live in dignity and prosperity across generations.
