Takeyuki Katsuya - the architect of the new CAMP NOU STADIUM in Barcelona - will be visiting Bulgaria for the very first time as a key note speaker at the International Façade Conference organized by ETEM on Oct 21, 2017.

The Spanish football city Barcelona is yet to feel proud of its fully reconstructed stadium featuring a quite modern design and a capacity that’s almost twice as much.

The leading architect of the designer’s team behind the new design of the exquisite arena in Barcelona is Takeyuki Katsuya - General Manager “Design” at the Japanese giant Nikken Sekkei, one of the leading architectural and engineering studios in Asia.

Back in 2016, Katsuya’s team managed to win the first prize at the International Design Competition for Camp Nou's iconic Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. Alongside the Spanish Pascual i Ausió Arquitectes Bureau, Nikken Sekkei’s architects offered significant changes regarding the stadium’s structure originally constructed back in 1957 by the Spanish architecture named Francesco Mittens Miro. In the ongoing reconstruction, the large roof of the stadium stretches from the center to the city, passing through all terraces and paths, giving an illustrative expression of the unique democratic structure of the football club.

In the meantime, viewers are able to become one with the city’s landscapes by completely removing the exterior facade of the building. Through “opening the stadium”, the architects have been trying to create a “secret space” making people feel connected to something whilst enjoying Barcelona’s atmosphere. With a capacity for 105,000 individuals and a total area of 104,000 square meters, the Camp Nou’s construction will have been finished by the end of 2021.

One of Takeyuki Katsuya’s latest projects is Sophia Tower, as a part of the Sofia Tower University, alongside the tallest building Yotun, and a Student campus in Tokyo, Japan.

The brand-new building has been designed with an attention towards the local community as the bottom floor walls will be covered with the same type of terracotta used in the construction of St. Ignatius Church - an emblematic and quite a significant place for the lively Yotouya area.

Since joining Nikken Sekkei's team back in 2000, Takeyuki Katsuya has been involved in designing large-scale buildings for different applications.

Katsuya's portfolio includes great projects, such as Renai Aoyama Building (2003), Toho Gakuen College Annex (2004), Nomura Co., Ltd. Craft Headquarter Building (2009), Mokuzai Kaikan Hall (2009), Toa Road Corporation Headquarters Building (2015) and Sophia University's Sophia Tower (2017).

The presence of such a great and skilled professional at the International Facade Conference is bound to present a new perspective and inspiration through the viewpoint of Japanese traditions for developing a harmonious architecture corresponding to the surrounding environment.

The Fourth International Conference on Facade Engineering is committed not only to a pretty dynamic program but to world-recognized architects and specialists from all over the world as well.

As for this year’s event, the ETEM organizers have again set themselves the goal of providing the leading designers with a platform to present the latest trends and innovations in both Design & Façade engineering.
